Wanbao management has been well aware that social risk management is the social license to responsible mining operation. That's why Wanbao volunteers for community and social development reach out for the villagers surrounding the Letpadaung mine to listen to their needs and try to address their concerns. Over 20 villages have been visited since May 12, 2014. This is the continuous village consultations done by us following the similar activities respectively in March and September 2013.

The On the Job Training Program was initiated to help relieve the jobs problem surrounding the mine as well as build the necessary skills which would assist villagers to acquire working positions during the production phase of the mine. Wanbao wanted to hire as many people as possible going forward from the impacted villagers but the company had identified early that individuals who did not have the requisite skills to help them benefit from its construction phase. So we initiated a 5- month On the Job Training Program to address elements of this problem. The aim was that, as soon as the trainees completed their training and passed their tests successfully, they would then be given a contract and join Wanbao's labour pool starting at Grade 9, with $USD120/month starting salary, and enjoy the same benefits including promotions etc as all other Wanbao staff.

I'm writing to express my sincere gratitude to you and your esteemed Police Corps for your full support in the rescue of our two Chinese contractors kidnapped by activists in the old Sede village during the 32 hours between May 18th and 19th, 2014.
Fortunately, our two Chinese colleagues were rescued without physical injury, while unfortunately, unfavorable mental impact is huge and that the police still suffered from physical injury and loss in the operation by attack from some mobs agitated by the outside activists. This kind of serious violation of law and use of violence by no means could be acceptable under any circumstances.
I understand that by proper resolution of this incident, a clear message has been sent to the public and the world that Myanmar government is capable to maintain the social stability and rule of law which is essential to carry out all major investment projects like Letpadaung copper project.
It is also clearly observed that the intention of the small group of activists and extremists is only to create conflict and confrontation as their behavior and request are neither reasonable nor constructive, which is apparently against the wish of the majority of the local community to continue benefit from the Project both in short term and in long run.
After the Release of Our Kidnapped Colleagues...We Invite You to Come and See for Yourself the Real Situation on the Ground
Tuesday, 20 May 2014
Wanbao invites all media to see what we are doing in consultation with the villages to build a joint future together. We have been working very hard on this and have brought in top expertise to help us. We have achieved a lot in winning the trust of some of the villages over the last few months. We believe that this played an important part allowing speedy release of our two kidnapped colleagues. It was the villagers themselves who decided to take part in leading the negotiations to free our colleagues. We would like you to meet these and other people to get a fair and balanced view of the situation.
We care about the future of your community, and we, and our neighboring villagers, want to share more of what we are doing with you.
