Upon completion of mining, the mine dewatering system will cease to operate and a pit lake will form. Pit lake water balance modelling indicates that the pit lake will be of low to moderate salinity (2,500 mg/l to 3,500 mg/l TDS) and that the steady state lake level will be below the pit crest and below the regional groundwater level. Due to evaporation from the pit lake surface the pit lake will act as a 'hydraulic sink' meaning that groundwater will flow towards the pit. The impact of the pit lake on the regional groundwater quality will therefore be minimal.
